Cumberland Sports Village
Workington, Cumbria
Client: Cumberland Council
Value: £ 16 Million
FWP is working with Cumberland Council and Workington’s two major sports clubs, Workington AFC (The Reds) and Workington Town RLFC, to redevelop the iconic Borough Park Stadium and create a new Cumberland Sports Village.
With a rich sporting heritage, Borough Park is a significant part of Workington’s history. The stadium has strong links to footballing greats, with Bill Shankly having honed his management skills there and the legendary Busby Babes having played at the ground.
The redevelopment will support the long-term ambitions of both clubs, providing a modern sporting facility designed to help Workington AFC progress up the football pyramid and support Workington Town RLFC’s aspirations for Super League following Championship promotion.
The initial development will provide capacity for 5,000 spectators and will include a new all-weather 3G playing surface suitable for both football and rugby. The redeveloped main stand will feature state-of-the-art changing facilities, new commercial spaces, executive boxes and entertainment areas.
The proposals will also include new floodlighting and improved parking, creating a modern, flexible and sustainable sporting venue for the clubs, their supporters and the wider community.
FWP is providing architectural and project management services for the redevelopment, helping to deliver an exciting new sporting destination while respecting the heritage and identity of Borough Park.
